Once again, Obafemi Awolowo’s published works hit the book shelves

In what looks like an annual ritual, an Ibadan -based book selling outlet , known as Sunshine Booksellers , has decided to release a collection of published works by late nationalist and former Premier of the old Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, into the market .

The Chief Executive officer , Mr . Peter Aloko , in a telephone conversation with punch news correspondent , said that the books included some of Awolowo’s most popular titles , such as his prison diary , My march through prison , People ’s Republic, The Autobiography of Obafemi Awolowo, Awo on the Nigerian civil war and The travails of democracy and the rule of law .

Asked why his company had to wait this long each year before presenting Awolowo’ s works for sale , Aloko said , “It is a seasonal thing .

This is because some of the author ’s works are not always available all - year long. So we have to wait for our sources to re -issue the books before we sell. ”

Also , explaining why Sunshine Booksellers deemed it necessary to officially announce the sale of the late nationalist’ s published works , he added , “Chief Obafemi Awolowo was not only a politician and national leader , but also he was a prolific author and a gifted orator .

“In fact a lot has been read , written and spoken about him , especially since his transition on May 9 , 1987 .

“He was also a man of humble beginning , who , by dint of hard work , self denial and singleness of purpose , rose to become a legal luminary and an economic wizard ; a political organizer , social engineer , reformer and a political leader of Nigeria .

“Awolowo was a leader who promoted religious tolerance and development, irrespective of faith and sect. He was a revolutionary whose single purpose was to provide free and compulsory education at all levels and free health care services , as well as gainful employment to all Nigerians .

“He was a promoter and supporter of higher education , who also founded many educational institutions , including teacher training colleges , colleges of technology and universities .”

Arguing that it would be beneficial to the society to make Awolowo’s published works available to future generations of Nigerians , he said , “Don ’t forget that he is still remembered in the country and in the world today as one Nigerian who , beside his exploits as a politician , strove to provide free education at all levels , free preventive and curative health and integrated rural development in the old Western Region when was the Premier .”
