Sergio Ramos in tears as Spain loose out of Worldcup #Russia2018

Sergio Ramos was emotionally drained after Spain's World Cup defeat to Russia and left the pitch at the Luzhniki Stadium in tears just moments after delving into his book of underhand tricks again.

After converting his penalty kick during the decisive shoot out, Ramos picked up the ball, held his position and waited for Denis Cheryshev, his former Real Madrid team-mate, to walk past.

As their paths crossed, Ramos got close tothe  face of the Russian, who is fluent in Spanish, and said something sure to be unpleasant in a bid to steal his focus. The trick did not work as Cheryshev slotted home to put Russia on the brink of victory.

Iago Aspas then saw his effort from 12 yards saved by the brilliant Igor Akinfeev as Russia progressed to the quarter-finals for the first time since the breakup of the Soviet Union.

As the reality of elimination set in, Ramos was visibly distraught and could be seen bent down on his knees sobbing. He was later consoled by manager Fernando Hierro.

It was a far cry from his jubilant celebrations earlier on when he helped to put Spain in front.

Russian defender Sergei Ignashevich was trying to wrestle Ramos down to the ground at the back post at a corner only for the ball to ricochet off the Russian and into the back of the net.

Their elation didn't last long though as Gerard Pique was penalised for handling the ball inside the box. Artem Dzyuba equalised moments before half-time and the scene was set for a nervy second-half.

The hosts remained resilient throughout and despite Spain dominating the ball they offered very little penetration. Ramos converted his penalty with ruthless composure but, despite his best efforts to distract Cheryshev, this was one game he just couldn't win.
